Significant Web Outage Affects Dozens Websites and Applications

A widespread internet outage has disrupted numerous websites and mobile apps globally, with users reporting troubles getting online after problems at Amazon’s online infrastructure service.

The affected services include the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, along with multiple Amazon-operated services like its key e-commerce website and the Ring doorbell company.

Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was affected in addition to its subsidiaries the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, with further notifications of issues accessing the HM Revenue and Customs site on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, many Ring users took to online platforms to state their security devices were malfunctioning.

Just within Britain, reports of disruptions on individual platforms ran into the thousands for every service.

The company stated that the problem began in the east coast of the US at AWS, a division that supplies essential web framework for a host of companies, who utilize space on the company's servers. The cloud platform is the biggest global cloud computing system.

Just after the start of the day (PDT) in the United States (8 in the morning BST), the company announced “higher failure rates and delays” for the cloud services in a region on the east coast of the United States. The ripple effect appeared to affect services globally, with the problem monitoring service reporting issues with the same sites in multiple continents.

The monitoring service Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on online failures, further indicated a surge in outages on Monday morning, with many of them found in the Virginia area, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where the company stated the outage originated.
